Lake Country will soon be getting a Community Health Centre.

Health minister Adrian Dix said during a Zoom meeting with Kelowna Chamber of Commerce today, Aug. 27, Kelowna Lake-Country Liberal MLA Norm Letnick has been a champion of the service.

Dix did not say when the new centre will open and offered not other details during the online meeting.

On its website, the Lake Country Health Planning Society says it’s been actively working on getting such a centre since 1982.

“Community Health Centres are non-profit, community-governed health organizations that provide primary health care, health promotion and community development services, using inter-disciplinary teams of health providers,” the society says.

The province has set up 18 Urgent and Primary Care Centres in cities around the province including Kelowna, Kamloops and Vernon.

“Urgent and Primary Care Centres provide a flexible resource to meet the urgent and primary health care need, primarily in large urban centres where a higher percentage of the population is unable to find or access a regular family doctor or nurse practitioner,” HealthLink B.C. says on its website.
