The community of Apex is supporting its local firefighters by providing food as they battle the Keremeos Creek Wildfire near the mountain.

Last week, the Apex Community Association delivered groceries for those with the Apex Fire Brigade so they could make fresh, healthy lunches.

"We also received quite a few home cooked meals as well… Thank you to the Sheeprock Lodge residents, the Chapman, Merritt, Lindsay and Rufiange families for providing some warm dinners for us," according to a Facebook post from the fire brigade.

A silent auction is also being held this afternoon starting at 3 p.m. at Slackwater Brewing in Penticton to support the Apex Fire Brigade.

More than 35 different firefighting detachments from across the province are assisting the B.C. Wildfire Service in protecting structures near the wildfire. The fire is burning roughly 21 km southwest of Penticton and has caused the evacuation of the Apex Mountain village as well as the small community of Ollala.

More than 1,000 properties within the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen have been told to evacuate and hundreds more are on evacuation alert, including some properties within the Village of Keremeos.

The wildfire is currently mapped at 5,903 hectares in size and is classified as out of control.

Night operations continued with both wildland and structural crews patrolling, mopping up where needed, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.

"Overnight crews were challenged on the south flank, north of Ollala, with some spotting. They were able to action it and then conduct some hand ignitions to solidify their lines and stalled the fire at the rock bluff north of the village. There has been no fire damage on structures though the overnight period."

Firefighters were also challenged on the northeast flank of the fire due to winds and are working on building contingency lines today.
