Corporate/community cooperation and good weather combined to make a successful day of rail trail fundraising and waste reduction awareness at Kal Tire's garage sale and market last Saturday.  A total of $8785.75 was raised for the Okanagan Rail Trail by selling donated goods, stall rental fees, financial donations, and other market activities. Kal Tire topped this up with an additional $5000 for a total of $13,785.75. Since the funds will be contributed during the Rail Trail October Donation Matching campaign, this amount will be doubled, resulting in a total of $27,571.50 towards rail trail construction.

In addition, a contribution to $10,400 from Vernon's 100 Men who Give a Damn was received at the garage sale event, and will also be matched in the October campaign.  The Okanagan Rail Trail had been selected as the recipient of funding during their meeting the week before.

"There are so many people to thank”, said Kevin McCarty, Kal Tire’s Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator.  “Thanks go to Kal Tire’s team, rail trail volunteers, the Community Foundation of North Okanagan, Vernon Outdoors Club, Save On Foods, Coldstream Creek Orchards and the many people who donated goods and/or purchased items at the sale.”  “Donated entertainment and kids activities came from Natalie Ingram, Marv Machura, Bounce Hire Inflatables, and Walter the pony from the Woida family."

"The garage sale provides a great example of a business supporting their staff and community initiatives", said Laurie Postill, Trail Ambassador. "This last week of the October matching campaign is crucial, and I still think we will see donors come forward who want to make their donations go further.”

The October matching campaign has raised over $300,000. To help ensure the target $500,000 is reached, you can still make a donation online or by contacting the Community Foundation of North Okanagan or Central Okanagan Foundation.
