'Come on in, the water's fine': Heat wave has warmed up Okanagan Lake

Swimmers in Peachland took a plunge into Okanagan Lake, Wednesday, June 2, 2021. This this week's record-breaking hot weather raised water temperatures six degrees since the end of May.

We are moving steadily closer to the time of year when our warm summer weather makes the Okanagan famous for vacationing, and water activities, and residents got a taste of those conditions this week.

The high pressure system that provided record-breaking high temperatures throughout the Okanagan Valley this week also went a long way to warming up Okanagan Lake.

The lake temperature has climbed six degrees since the end of May and while still a little cool, it is warming up fast.

Okanagan Lake is 19 Celsius today, June 3, two degrees higher than yesterday and up six degrees since May 29, according to the website SeaTemperatureInfo.

The lake’s average June temperature ranges from 13 C to 25 C, so we’re not doing badly so early in June.

Ideal swimming temperatures are said to be in the 25 to 28 C range, although ideal water temperature can depend on a number of factors, including air temperature, personal preference and comfort level, according to The Weather Network.
