Coldstream local, Laisha Rosnau, won the $60,000 Latner Griffin Poetry Prize.

The Latner Griffin Prize is given out by the Writers’ Trust annually to a Canadian poet who has published at least three collections and is still active in their career.

There is no submission process for the award, three judges select a poet whose work shows they have mastered their craft.

This year’s judges were Madhur Anand, Joseph Dandurand, and Dina Del Bucchia. The judges had high praise for Rosnau’s writing.

“Laisha Rosnau’s work shows us the flaws and fragility of being human. Her expansive body of work addresses personal and global issues in language sometimes woven delicately, and other times with necessary force. Ultimately, we are left with the desire to read more from this striking and intelligent poetic voice,” the jury citation said.

Rosnau’s three collections; Notes on Leaving, Lousy Explorers, and Pluck, have received accolades in the past. Notes on Leaving won the 2005 Acorn-Planos Poetry Award, Lousy Explorers was a finalist for the Pat Lowther Award, and Pluck was nominated for the Raymond Souster Award.

In addition to writing poetry, Rosnau teaches fiction and poetry at UBC, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver Film School, and Okanagan College. Rosnau and her family are the resident caretakers at Bishop Wild Bird Sanctuary in Coldstream.

The Latner Griffin Prize is funded by the Latner Family Foundation and Scott Griffin.
