A civilian was the first on scene when a Kamloops RCMP officer called for backup Wednesday morning.
The officer was patrolling the North Shore area around 10 a.m., July 27, when he was called to a wellness check on the 1000-block of Westminster Avenue, according to a Kamloops RCMP news release.
“What came in as a standard complaint to check on a group of people allegedly using drugs and acting in a lewd manner, led to something much different when one of the men the officer was checking on left quickly,” Cpl. Crystal Evelyn of Kamloops RCMP said in a news release.
The officer discovered the man on the run had a warrant, so he searched the area, only to later find him on the 900-block of Tranquille Road.
The officer and the suspect ended up in a "struggle that went to the ground," according to a release.
Although he called for backup, there was only a civilian around to help.
“The officer was alone at the time of the arrest and without the assistance of the civilian, the situation could have quickly gotten worse during the short time it took for other officers to locate him,” Evelyn said.
Tyral Dane LaRiviere, born in 1985, is now facing a charge for resisting arrest and was released on bail today, according to court documents.
The officer didn't get the civilian's name, but the person helped to detain the suspect until more police got to the alleyway.
"The support provided to the officer was very much appreciated and the Kamloops RCMP Detachment would like to say thank you," the release reads.
The detachment asks this person, or anyone who knows them, to contact the detachment so they can be thanked in person.
It's the second time a civilian helped RCMP with an arrest in Kamloops this week. Someone also helped hold a person making threats on a city bus on July 26 until police arrived.
