Vernon’s recreation services programs and facilities will have a tiered pricing and access system in the new year that will benefit Vernon residents.

In the past, Vernon and its neighbouring communities had an agreement in place to allow out-of-town residents to benefit from the same prices and access to recreation services programs and facilities. The agreement was not renewed this year, so a tiered system was proposed,

The motion to create the system was passed city council today, Oct. 23.

The new system will begin in the new year as the previous agreement with communities in the Greater Vernon area expires on Dec. 31.

The tiered system will give Vernon residents a 50% discount for all posted recreation admission and rental rates, a 25% discount for registered programs and they will be provided access to register to programs two weeks before non-residents.

Other municipalities and regional district electoral areas will have the opportunity to enter into a fee-for-service agreement with the City of Vernon to provide their citizens with the same benefits as Vernon residents.

"Non-residents and residents of municipalities and electoral areas who do not participate in a fee for service for their residents, will have an option to pay an additional fee to gain equal access," reads the motion passed by council. Households can buy an access card $800 per year or $375 for individuals.

Multiple options to identify Vernon residents are being evaluated.

The idea is that Vernon residents will have a Vernon Resident Program card and with this card have access to preferential prices and access. The implementation will begin next month, so it is ready for January 2024.
