Child birth 'not medical' says unlicensed BC midwife

A BC woman is defending her practice of offering unlicensed midwifery services after a professional regulator issued a warning to the public.

The BC College of Nurses and Midwives issued a notice on Oct. 16 warning that Karma Dawn is not and has never been registered as a midwife, despite claiming to be a "traditional midwife" on her website "Primal Woman." The College said she's not entitled to work as a midwife in BC without her registration.

Dawn called the college's notice a "witch hunt" against her, that childbirth is not a "medical event" but an "innate" process that is "meant to be left alone."

"When a medical midwife can truly say that she's witnessed an undisturbed birth where she has literally sat on her hands and did nothing but have complete trust in the woman's body she's supporting..., will my work and that of so many others in this field stop," she wrote in a social media statement.

Dawn went on to say the licensing process does "nothing but pit women against each other," dismissing the college's regulation of licensed midwives.

"When (the college) and all medical midwives can understand the ceremonial and sacred aspects of birth over the unnecessary interference, coercion, sexual abuse, rape and fear mongering, only then will birth begin to heal," her statement reads.

A disclaimer on her website, however, says information from Dawn, either on her site or in person, is for "informational or educational purposes only." It's not meant to substitute advice from healthcare professionals, according to the disclaimer.

Dawn runs her business on Vancouver Island and on the Gulf Islands, according to her website.
