Some of the public facilities closed due to a chemical exposure in Lumby this morning have reopened.
A village employee was opening Oval Park this morning, July 14, which includes the spray park and pool on Glencaird Street, and preforming routine maintenance when they began feeling unwell while handling chemicals, according to a Village of Lumby media release. The village doesn’t say what chemicals were involved.
The employee was taken to hospital for observation and the Vernon fire department's hazmat team was deployed to investigate.
The employee had accidentally mixed chemicals resulting in exposure. Those chemicals were disposed of by the hazmat team.
The village says there is no longer a risk to the public.
Along with the Oval Park, the nearby White Valley Community Centre and Lumby branch of the Okanagan Regional Library on Shields Avenue are also closed.
The community centre has since reopened and the library will reopen tomorrow.
The spray park and pool remain closed out of abundance of caution and it is expected to reopen tomorrow.
“We thank emergency personnel for their quick response and will review our operational procedures to identify ways to avoid a situation like this from occurring again,” CAO Tom Kadla says in a release
