Cellphones of British Columbia all beeped at the same time this afternoon

In order to test a mass warning system called Alert Ready, British Columbians were among many Canadians who received an emergency notification on their phone this afternoon.

The alert notifies cell phones with a siren that lasts for about five seconds.

"TEST TEST TEST," the text reads.

"No action is required ... if this had been an actual emergency, this message would include instructions to help keep you and your community safe."

It recommends visiting www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca for more info.

In B.C., the alert came at 1:55 p.m. today, May 4 – right on schedule.

Last year, Alert Ready sent out 173 warnings across the country relating to wildfires, tornadoes, flash floods, Amber Alerts, civil emergencies, police emergencies and drinking water warnings.
