PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - A humanitarian group has received $18 million from Canada to help Haitians displaced by the 2010 earthquake return to their old neighbourhoods.
The International Organization for Migration says in a Monday statement that the money will target some 53,000 people. A portion of the money will help cover their rent for a year.
The camps in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince were selected because they are at risk of eviction or are located in schools.
Haiti once had as many as 1.5 million people living in encampments after the quake but the number has since dwindled to 146,000.
An International Organization for Migration official says that number likely will drop to zero by next year. Many former camp residents now live in alleys and on hillsides.
