HAVANA - One of Cuba's top diplomats says his government is hopeful that U.S. public opinion will force Washington to end the trade embargo on the island regardless of who wins this year's presidential election.

The bilateral commission that oversees U.S-Cuba negotiations on topic ranging from law enforcement to aviation meets Monday in Havana to set the agenda for the remaining months of the Obama administration.

Gustavo Machin is Cuba's assistant director of U.S. affairs and he says the country was heartened by polls showing majority of Americans in favour of ending the half-century-old embargo on Cuba.

"We'll do our part," he said. "We hope that the next president of the United States acts in accordance with what that society, that country, demands."
