LAKE COUNTRY - Lake Country could have the first retail cannabis outlet in the Okanagan.

Compass Cannabis Clinic plans to open its first retail store under the Starbuds brand in Lake Country. They opened the Starbuds outlet as a medicinal cannabis clinic at the Turtle Bay Crossing mall earlier this year.

According to Compass vice-president and co-founder Graeme Hawkins, the company applied to the B.C. government six weeks ago for permission to open the Lake Country retail location. Hawkins is hopeful the store will be ready for business this December.

"I commend the province," he said. "They kicked (the process) into high gear."

Compass operated several medicinal cannabis clinics before legalization, but the Lake Country store will be their first retail location in Canada. They have several similar applications in other cities in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Compass plans to convert its Lake Country medicinal cannabis clinic into a Starbuds retail store, which could it the first legal cannabis retail outlet in the Okanagan.

"We've been lucky with our (Lake Country) location," Hawkins said. "We're excited to open there."
