Ontario environmentalist's houseboat washes up on beach in Ireland

A house boat built by an Ontario environmentalist has washed up on an Irish beach.

The coast guard in Ballyglass, Ireland, says a note was found inside the vessel from Rick Small, the Thunder Bay, Ont., eco-adventurer who reportedly built the boat in Newfoundland, offering it up to homeless youth.

The coast guard says a hiker spotted the vessel washed up on the shore.

The wooden boat, complete with solar panels, ran aground near Cross Beach in County Mayo, and has been removed by Irish authorities.

Radio station VOCM reported the boat had been docked in Portugal Cove-St. Philips, N.L., over the summer, and had apparently been abandoned.

Media reports say Small travelled to Newfoundland on a three-wheeled bicycle in 2015.
