Can you guess what Vernon’s top spoken languages are?

VERNON - It’s no surprise that for more than 38,000 Vernon residents, English is the language most commonly spoken at home. But the second and third languages might surprise you.

According to newly released figures from Statistics Canada, 260 people identified Punjabi as the language they most commonly spoke at home during the 2016 Census.

After that, 170 people said German is the language they usually speak at home, and 120 said they speak Russian. About 95 speak either Cantonese or Mandarin.

Only 100 said they spoke French.

A comparison with Vernon’s most common mother tongue languages shows many people do not speak their first language at home. In 2016, 535 people said French was their mother tongue, 1,000 said it was German, and 380 Punjabi.

Only 30 people identified an Aboriginal language as their mother tongue, and only 10 said they speak it at home.
