Calling all kitsch lovers: Have any souvenirs from the '80s and '90s in Kelowna?

Kelowna Museums are looking for some old souvenirs from a time in the not too distant past.

KELOWNA - Have fond memories of Kelowna’s Bedrock City? What about the old roller rink?

Better yet, any frayed photos, ticket stubs or programs from those halcyon days kicking around?

If so, the Okanagan Heritage Museum wants to know all about it for an upcoming exhibit called Kelowna’s Amusing Past.

“We’ve had this idea to do an exhibit on that time ever since the Malibu Grand Prix closed and we got to get a lot of stuff from there, like posters, stickers and arcade games,” said Amanda Snyder, curatorial manager of the Okanagan Heritage Museum.

The show will focus on festivals and the Regatta and Snow Fest, The Boardwalk roller rink, Okanagan Zoo, Old MacDonald’s Farm and the Kelowna (Boyd) Drive-In Theatre and the waterslides.

There was plenty to do back then, but finding remnants of the era that spanned the period between big bangs and the flat does from the grunge era is harder than one might expect.

It was a time of impermanence, demonstrated by disposable cameras and the rise of all things plastic. That said, it’s of no less relevance.

“People don’t think about donating those items to the museum because it’s not old enough,” said Snyder. "So we lack decades in the collections, like the '70s, '80s and '90s for this exhibit."

People can either lend an item, donate it or, if it’s a photo, they can bring it to the museum where it can be scanned.

“We’ve even found some cool old ads for these places and few newspaper articles,” she said.

Right now the exhibit is in its planning stages and will open Aug. 17 and run until Nov. 18.

“We are excited it will be here when the school programs are opening. A lot of students won’t remember these places, but hopefully, they will think they’re cool.”
