SANTA MONICA, Calif. - A driver crashed a car Monday into a restaurant on the Santa Monica Pier, injuring one person and damaging a boat meant to serve as a barricade to keep vehicles off the landmark structure, authorities said.

The pier and restaurant were closed at the time but later opened as usual.

Daniel Arroyos, 21, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after he got into an early morning altercation with construction workers then drove his car toward them on a pedestrian-only section of the pier, Santa Monica police Sgt. Roberto Villegas said.

The car careened into the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurant after damaging the barricade.

One worker suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Villegas didn't know where Arroyos lives or if he has an attorney. And there were no further details available on the altercation or the extent of damage to the restaurant.

The pier is a draw for tourists who come to eat, ride the famous Ferris wheel and rollercoaster or enjoy the view of Santa Monica Bay.
