The Latest: 1 woman dead, 1 missing after falling into river

FRESNO, Calif. - The Latest on two women who fell into a central California river (all times local):

2:45 p.m.

One of two young women who fell into a central California river while hiking has died.

Tulare County sheriff's spokeswoman Teresa Douglass also said Thursday that authorities continue to search for the other woman.

The women were on a day hike with friends in the Sequoia National Forest when one person slipped into the Tule River. The other woman went in to help her out.

Douglass said the woman who died was extracted from the river by helicopter.

The women are in their 20s.

Water rescuers are searching for two women who were swept into a central California river Thursday.

Tulare County sheriff's spokeswoman Teresa Douglass says the county's Swift Water Rescue Team will search the Tule River in the Sequoia National Forest.

The office received the call for help around 10 a.m. She says they believe the two are young adults.

Douglass says it is a rescue operation.

The search area is about 104 miles (167 kilometres) southeast of Fresno.
