The Latest: Man held in random beating of LA woman, 85

February 28, 2018 - 6:33 PM

LOS ANGELES - The Latest on the arrest of a man for the beating of an elderly woman (all times local):

6:40 p.m.

Police have re-arrested a man they say randomly punched an octogenarian as she walked down a Los Angeles street.

Richard Colomo was taken into custody Tuesday. It wasn't clear whether he had a lawyer.

The 41-year-old was arrested earlier this month but released pending further investigation.

Detectives say the victim, Mi Reum (mee ruhm) Song, was walking to a grocery store in Koreatown on Feb. 10 when a man hit her in the face.

She fell, slammed her head on the pavement and lost consciousness. She suffered gashes to her head and two black eyes but police say she will recover.

Song was 85 at the time of the attack but has since turned 86.

Investigators say Colomo didn't know the woman and they're still trying to determine a motive for the attack.

He's been charged with abuse of an elder that caused great bodily injury and could face up to nine years in prison if convicted.
