Buy a used book, help make North Shore brighter

Red Beard Cafe, the McDonald Park Neighbourhood Association and the Kamloops Symphony are teaming up to bring a pop-up book store to Tranquille. Proceeds will go towards beautification initiatives in the area.

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents can expect to see more action on the sidewalks of Tranquille in the upcoming weeks as three local organizations work together to host a recurring pop-up book store.

Red Beard Cafe, the McDonald Park Neighbourhood Association and the Kamloops Symphony are all teaming for the project between Moustache and Go and Red Beard Cafe, according to a news release by the co-owner of Red Beard, Mitchell Forgie. The goal is to raise money to contribute to neighbourhood beautification.

"The McDonald Park Neighbourhood Association is specifically raising money for their mural project in the park that is hoping to reduce graffiti and vandalism," Forgie says. "The idea is to take ugly buildings that are targets for vandalism and make them beautiful parts of the area."

Forgie says they hope to raise around $20,000. The funds will go towards paying mural artist Kelly Wright and his materials and to the Kamloops Symphony which is supplying the book inventory.

The pop-up book store will take place on Saturday Aug. 24, Aug. 31 and Sept. 7.

The North Shore Business Improvement Association will also be extending their Saturday afternoon busking program in the area to contribute to the liveliness as well.

If the pop-up store is successful, Forgie says they hope to work with more North Shore associations to run it more frequently.

"In a way the book sale itself is a beautification initiative by trying to bring more interest and vibrancy to the area," he says.
