VERNON - Iconic Canadian folk singer Buffy Sainte-Marie will be taking to the stage in Vernon for a rare solo performance.

The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre will be hosting Buffy Saine-Marie Sept. 23.

The Cree singer-songwriter released her groundbreaking debut, 'It's My Way!' in 1964 and over 50 years later released her award-winning 'Power in the Blood' in 2015.

According to a media release, as well as being a singer Sainte-Marie is a trailblazer and a tireless advocate, an innovative artist, and a disruptor of the status quo.

"Sainte-Marie has spent her whole life creating, and her artistry, humanitarian efforts, and Indigenous leadership have made her a unique force in the music industry."

Sainte-Marie also broke artistic grounds recording one of the world's first electronic vocal albums in 1969. She was the first woman to breastfeed on national television during her five-year stint on Sesame Street.

She's also written songs performed by Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, Donovan, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes and wrote the iconic anti-war song, Universal Soldier.

Sainte-Marie is the only Indigenous artist ever win an Academy Award, which she did in 1983, and she's also won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe
award.

She was given the Companion of the Order of Canada in June this year for her contributions to music and visual arts, as well as her support for Indigenous rights and environmental activism.

Buffy Sainte-Marie will be at The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Sept. 23. Tickets cost from $49 for adults, $46 for seniors, and $44 for students. For more information call the Ticket Seller Box Office at 250-549-7469 or online here.
