A group of women who want to dust off their wedding gowns and make every day special provided some entertainment around Vernon last weekend.

Vernon resident Desta Balducci originally started hosting wedding dress parties a few years ago.

“We spent all this money on these dresses and they’re so beautiful and we only wear it one time and it’s sort of wasteful and it’s nice to dress up and celebrate being a woman and being happy and being married,” she said.

The wedding dress parties then evolved to fancy dress parties and one year even saw brides spending time in their dresses in her swimming pool.

This past Saturday, a group of about 17 women donned their gowns and hopped on scooters to zip around Vernon.

“It just seemed like it would be a very fun cool thing to do,” she said. “It was crazy, people were honking, whistling, hooting, cheering us on. We rode through downtown and we didn’t realize the Show N’ Shine was downtown so there were a ton of people."

“It was amazing.”

She hopes to continue hosting fancy dress parties in the future and might encourage people to bring their own scooters next time as Balducci and her husband spent the afternoon collecting them from around town for the event.

Holly Read, a friend of Balducci’s, said she was happy to see the return of the event for the third time as it was put on hold due to the pandemic.

“It was pretty exciting getting it started up again since COVID hit and we wanted in some way to get out and show off the dresses.”

Wearing the wedding dresses made them feel fancy, "and we don’t feel fancy all that often,” Read said.
