GOLDEN - An active search for a suspect is currently unfolding near Golden and officers have shut down a large section of the Trans Canada Highway.

RCMP E-division spokesperson Staff Sgt. Rob Vermeulen says a vehicle stop was conducted this afternoon west of Golden in connection with a possible theft.

He says the driver failed to comply with police direction and stole a nearby vehicle.

"During this incident an RCMP police officer was injured with what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries," Vermeulen says.

He doesn't say how the officer was injured but unconfirmed reports on social media suggest an officer may have been shot.

There is now an active search taking place for the suspect.

Vermeulen says there is limited information available at the moment.

"We have the highway closed at the moment," Staff Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky of Revelstoke RCMP says.

Grabinsky confirms Revelstoke RCMP are attending the scene, but cannot release any information about the unfolding incident.

More to come.
