Penticton’s responsible liquor consumption pilot program is coming back for another season.
The program, which allows consumption of alcohol along designated parts of Okanagan and Skaha Lake beaches, was successfully implemented last year.
Council gave first, second and third readings to the bylaw at a council meeting today, April 20, and is expected to adopt the bylaw at its May 4 council meeting.
“It was a bold decision, but good things come of bold decisions,” councillor Julius Bloomfield said.
City staff will report back to council in November with result and observations of the program over the summer season for consideration regarding decisions to extend the program into future years.
City planner Blake Laven told council the initial season was well received by the public, but noted in an end of season review the need for improved garbage and recycling pickup in the areas where alcohol consumption was allowed.
"I think one of the things that will make this successful is carrying this on as a bylaw," councillor Campbell Watt said, calling it "a good idea that is evolving into a great one."
Citing conflict of interest, Mayor John Vassilaki recused himself from the discussion.
