The RCMP Major Crime Unit is investigating the death of a woman in the North Okanagan who was reported missing by police over the weekend.

Tatjana Stefanski, 44, was last seen getting into a car with her ex-husband Vitali Steffan, according to her husband Jason Gaudreault. He said on social media she was abducted but calls to the RCMP this weekend failed to clarify that information, nor the spelling of her name.

Today, April 15, North Okanagan RCMP now say they were investigating an abduction in the Lumby area when they found her dead in a rural area, according to an RCMP news release issued today, April 15.

Police say they have arrested a male suspect near where the woman's body was found, and the suspect was released from custody with a series of conditions he must abide by. Police did not identify the suspect, nor clarify if it was her ex-husband.

Police said Stefanski's death is the result of foul play.

“At this juncture, investigators believe that this incident is isolated and that no threat to the public exists,” Staff Sgt. Jason Smart of the Southeast District Major Crime Unit said in the release.

Anyone with video, dash camera footage or other from along Highway 6 to the west of Lumby within the Village of Lumby, north along Shuswap Avenue or Lumby-Mabel Lake Road towards and up the east side of Mabel Lake between 7 a.m. on April 13, 2024, to 10 a.m. on April 14, 2024, is asked to contact the Southeast District Major Crime Unit Tip Line at 1-877-987-8477.
