KELOWNA - Big White Ski Resort is auctioning off one of its original Powder Chairs to raise money for the players and those affected by the Humboldt Broncos tragedy.

All money raised will be donated to the Funds for Humboldt Broncos GoFundMe page, Big White says in a media release. Since it started five days ago, the GoFundMe page has already surpassed its fundraising goal of $4 million and continues to climb higher than $10 million, as of April 13.  According to Sylvie Kellington, the founder of the Funds for Humboldt Broncos GoFundMe page, all money will go directly to the player's families to help with any expenses incurred and assist them through this difficult time.

“In support and memory of those affected, Big White Ski Resort will be auctioning off one of the original Powder Chairs to the highest bidder,” the resort says. “The original Powder Chair was the oldest and most popular triple chair in Canada for the last 39 years, giving families countless rides and memories on Big White’s slopes.”

This winter, it was announced the original triple chair would be replaced by a new $3.9 million four-passenger fixed grip Leitner Poma lift with an upload capacity of 1,900 passengers per hour, which will allow more families to enjoy the terrain near the Powder Chair.

“The longest serving triple Mueller Powder Chair in Canada means a lot to a lot of people,” says Michael J. Ballingall, senior vice president at Big White Ski Resort. “The least we could do, out of respect for the Humboldt Broncos, is auction off one of these chairs and send all the proceeds to this inspiring campaign.”

The bidding for the chair, Chair #117, began today, April 13, at 9 a.m. To bid, donators are encouraged to visit the online auction page and place their bid before 9 a.m., Saturday April 21. The winning bidder must be able to pick up their chair from the Big White Ski Resort Downtown Office, located at 1894 Ambrosi Rd., in Kelowna.
