VERNON - The City of Vernon is distributing community-identified best routes maps for cycling following an extensive community consultation project. The map is part of the City’s commitment to make cycling easier for residents and visitors by providing an extensive network of cycling routes around the city.
City staff consulted with the public and key stakeholders during 15 community input sessions in 2013 and 2014 to develop best route mapping for cycling and walking. In September 2014, the Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan was endorsed by Council for inclusion in the Master Transportation Plan, which is currently under development. A best-routes walking map is also planned.
The project was funded in part by the Healthy Communities Capacity Building Fund, a partnership between BC Healthy Communities Society and Healthy Families BC, which has a mandate of creating healthier communities, and providing learning opportunities, resources, and leading-edge practices for collaborative local action.
Free copies of the cycling map are located at Vernon City Hall and Community Services Building, the Okanagan Regional Library (Vernon Branch), the Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Vernon Association, Skyride and Sun Country Cycle shops, as well as several local cafés. The maps can also be viewed at www.vernon.ca/vernonmoves.
