Bentley informs creditors it plans to close less profitable luggage stores

MONTREAL - Baggage retailer Bentley says it has formally notified creditors of its plan to close some stores as it restructures its operations.

The Montreal-based company says its profitability has been hurt by changing consumer behaviour, disruptions from internet shopping and the challenges associated with operating more than 250 stores across the country.

Bentley Leather Inc. says it is confident the new plan will "better position the company moving forward."

The company says it is in the process of analyzing each store's performance and will close less profitable locations while keeping most of the stores.

In the meantime, it says business will continue as usual, including its Black Friday sale.

Founded in 1987 in St. John's, N.L., Bentley has grown to be one of the largest Canadian retailers of luggage, handbags, business bags and travel accessories.
