BE KIND, REWIND: Massive vintage VHS tape collection in Kamloops up for sale

Up to 5,000 VHS cassettes are up for sale in Kamloops as part of an ongoing plan to make space for a new video rental store in the Paramount Theatre.

The sale will appeal to movie lovers, collectors of vintage pieces and those who are nostalgic for the clunky cassettes and titles of the past. That's enough movies that you could watch them back to back for a whole year.

The sale and video store project is being run by the Kamloops Film Society and began in August when the society purchased a combined collection of 25,000 VHS cassettes and DVDs from MovieMart. The initial goal was to open a video store in the downtown theatre sometime in September.

Dusan Magdolien is the Executive Director of the society.

“We have over 25,000 movies to sort out and organize,” he said. “It took around 250 moving boxes to bring them all here, it is taking a while to get through stuff. There is a combination of movies from MovieMart and those donated by the community.”

Magdolien said the VHS cassettes are in the downstairs part of the theatre getting ready to be sold while the DVDs are stored upstairs. He said he thinks there are many residents who still own a VCR and there has been a good amount of interest in the sale, which will be ongoing until all of the VHS cassettes are sold.

“Retro is cool and some buyers just want to hold onto a memory,” he said. “There are some movies that are only available in the VHS format. There are some people in their twenties buying these. The prices will be going down as we go.”

After the mountain of old videos is mostly sold, Magdolien plans to sell off any duplicates of the DVDs, with the remainder making up the stock for the new store.

“The hope is 5,000 to 10,000 of them will be duplicates,” he said. “We don’t have as much room as MovieMart did. There are some Blu-rays in the mix but not many. We will slowly continue to grow our Blu-ray stock in the future.”

Magdolien said all the movies are in a range of condition from well used to like new, depending on their histories. People can buy in bulk, five videos for ten dollars, twenty videos for twenty dollars, fifty for thirty and one hundred for forty-five.

The sale started Oct. 14 and runs from noon until 6 p.m. and every Thursday and Friday following at the same time until the vintage videos are mostly gone.
