An investigation has been launched by the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. into an officer-involved fatal shooting in Quesnel early this morning.

Officers were checking a vehicle parked in a lot in the 400 block of Carson Avenue in Quesnel today, Aug. 31, and they found a man asleep inside, according to an RCMP media release.

RCMP say when the officers approached, the man “reportedly reached for a firearm and shots were fired.”

The independent investigation office said in media release that an interaction occurred between the individual and the officers.

The man was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.

No further information will be released by the RCMP as the independent investigations office looks into the shooting.

The IIO is asking any person with relevant information of the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the IIO website here.

The Independent Investigations Office is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in B.C. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
