KAMLOOPS – Seven firefighters are on the scene of a small grass fire which broke out across the lake from Tobiano golf course Thursday afternoon.

“It was growing pretty steadily,” said fire information officer Melissa Klassen “we responded by sending air tankers initially... a total of three aircraft laying retardant.”

Klassen added a helicopter was sent to bucket the water.

The fire is suspected to be human-caused and grew quickly because of the hot and dry conditions. The surrounding sage and vegetation in the area fuelled the flames.
Three sides of the fire are blocked with retardant.

“Right now those seven firefighters are just going to be working on establishing a guard around the perimeter,” Klassen said.

The size of the fire is estimated to be one hectare.

B.C. Wildfire is reminding the public that campfire bans remain in effect for the long weekend.
