BC Urban Mayors' Caucus lives on post-pandemic

Kelowna mayor Tom Dyas is meeting with other mayors of major urban centres in B.C. as a part of an informal caucus to address various issues confronting the cities.

“I hear clearly the concerns expressed by our residents in Kelowna – social disorder, community safety, need for better substance use treatments and solutions, urgent need for affordable housing and improved transportation,” Dyas says in a media release issued today, Sept. 6.

The BC Urban Mayors' Caucus started meeting monthly in response to COVID-19, but now they come together to discuss a range of problems impacting each city. The 17 mayors in the caucus are from cities with over 80,000 people, including Kelowna and Kamloops.

Dyas has high hopes for what they can accomplish.

“The (mayors' caucus) intends to use all means within our authority to take action on issues and lead the way in creating a safer, healthier, more affordable and sustainable future,” Dyas says.

It represents 55% of BC residents and Dyas says they intend to use their collective bargaining power with the province.

They meet with provincial leaders each quarter to voice municipalities’ concerns and ensure the province is informed about the issues facing urban areas in BC.

Dyas also meets with the mayors of Vernon and Penticton to ensure the the other mayors hears concerns from all of the Okanagan.
