BC nurse reprimanded for tendering psychiatric diagnosis on patient he never met

A BC nurse is being publicly reprimanded for making a psychiatric diagnosis for someone he’d never met.

According to a June 9 BC College of Nurses and Midwives decision, Nelson registered psychiatric nurse Daniel Metzger breached documentation, professional accountability and ethics standards when he inferred the diagnosis for third parties he’d never met, according to a report the Metzger made on behalf of his clients.

The issues occurred between October and December, 2021.

“This conduct represented the lack of professional judgement and critical thinking expected of a registered psychiatric nurse,” the decision reads.

That is all the information offered by the college. It offered no further context of how he came to make such a diagnosis, if it was incorrect, how it was discovered, why his opinion was sought or if there were any repercussions.

Metzger voluntarily agreed to a condition on his practise that includes a public reprimand and a regulatory practise consulting program “to address the foundational issues underpinning the agreement."

The Inquiry Committee said it is satisfied that the terms will protect the public.
