A BC moving company was ordered to pay nearly $2,000 after it showed up to move a client with a truck that was already half full of someone else's stuff, then lost some of his items and damaged a wall in the new home.
Dan Currie was moving from the Okanagan to Vancouver Island last year when he hired 2 Burley Men Moving Ltd. He arranged the movers two weeks before, but they showed up with a truck half-full of someone else's belongings, according to BC Civil Resolution Tribunal, the province's small claims court.
The truck couldn't carry everything from his house, but the new owner was set to take possession the next day. He emailed the company, but it responded by offering to take the rest two days later and obviously too late.

On top of the $6,600 moving bill, Currie had to rent a van to move the remainder of his things, which cost him a total $1,400 including fuel and a ferry ticket, according to the decision.
"(2 Burley Men) says Mr. Currie had a larger shipment than when they initially requested the move.... I do not accept that Mr. Currie had a larger shipment than expected. As a company engaged in the moving business, I find that Burley would have made appropriate inquiries about the volume of Mr. Currie’s belongings and that Burley knew how much truck space was required.
"I find that (2 Burley Men) was aware that Mr. Currie was moving houses and should reasonably have foreseen that a 2-day delay could cause Mr. Currie to incur expenses," tribunal member Peter Mennie said. "I find that Burley’s failure to transport all of Mr. Currie’s belongings on October 26, 2022, was a breach of the parties’ agreement and that Mr. Currie is entitled to damages."
All of his additional expenses for moving were covered. But that wasn't the only issue.
Once arriving at the new Vancouver Island home, the Burley movers damaged a wall and lost two guitars, a keyboard and a rug. Although the instruments were returned, the rug wasn't found and Currie had to repair the wall. The company had already agreed to reimburse for losses and damages.

On Oct. 11, the tribunal ordered 2 Burley Men to pay a $1,667 in damages, along with nearly $200 in court fees.
