Cops get called for all sorts of adventures and that includes, apparently, herding livestock.

Mounties in Nanaimo came across a missing alpaca this week and had to figure out how to handle the situation.

Chewy, a 3-year-old pet alpaca, jumped over its owner’s fence and decided to roam the land in the middle of the night on Tuesday.

Chewy's owner realized he was missing around 2 a.m.

Nanaimo RCMP was informed Chewy had been seen wandering around by the Trans-Canada Highway south of Nanaimo.

Officers were worried about Chewy’s safety and rushed to the scene where they found him enjoying the sights and sounds of freedom.

Police used their vehicles to carefully corral Chewy to safety. After about an hour of leading it down the road, police managed to get it home.

Chewy’s owner believes he was frightened by something and jumped the fence to escape.

“All in all, with a little creativity, the incident was successfully dealt with and the officers now have a good story to share with their work mates,” said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
