A BC massage therapist has been barred from treating female patients after he allegedly touched a patient in a non-therapeutic manner.

According to a June 15 BC College of Massage Therapists decision, Yifu (George) Qiu, has been prohibited from treating females while an investigation takes place.

The decision says the regulator received a complaint April 14 that Qiu had engaged in "unprofessional verbal communications" with a patient and "engaged in sexual misconduct by engaging in non-therapeutic touching of sensitive areas of the patient’s body."

The massage therapist, who owns the George Q. Clinic in Burnaby, was ordered not to massage female clients and display a sign in his treatment room in English and Chinese saying so.

The order not to treat females is temporary, while the regulator conducts an investigation and a possible disciplinary hearing takes place.

"The (regulator) considered the allegations to be serious and found that there would be a risk of recurrence if an interim order were not made," the decision reads.

The regulator has also ordered Qiu to provide it with a list of the clients he treats each week and their contact information.

"(Qiu) will be subject to random on-site audits of his practice by a College-appointed inspector to ensure compliance with the orders," the decision says.

According to the College, Qiu has been a registered massage therapist since August 2020 and did have a clean record.
