Police have approved charges against a Surrey man for allegedly importing a massive amount of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking.

Steven Andrew Golding, a 64 year-old Surrey resident, may be facing a life sentence in prison for the offences. Police allege he tried to bring 89.805 kilograms of methamphetamines along with a legitimate commercial haul on tractor trailer, Dec. 1, 2018. Border guards searched his vehicle and found bags of methamphetamine.

The Public Prosecution Service of Canada finally approved the charges for Importation of Methamphetamine and Possession of Methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking on August 10, 2020, according to an RCMP release.

Federal Serious and Organized Crime team (FSOC) investigators were called to assist and took conduct of the investigation.

"We commend our partners at Canada Border Services Agency for their sharpness in detecting and locating these dangerous narcotics. Our FSOC investigators rose to the challenge to gather solid evidence for charges to be laid," Inspector Stephen Lee of RCMP FSOC said in a release.

Methamphetamine is typically sold by the "point" at street level in British Columbia, which equals 0.1 gram per point.

"The amount of methamphetamine seized in this investigation equates to almost 900,000 'points' of methamphetamine," he said.

Golding was arrested on Aug. 17, 2020 and issued release conditions including a Promise to Appear on Sept. 14, 2020 at the Surrey Provincial Court for his first appearance.
