Playnow, BC’s only legal online gambling site, is now offering bets on the hospital location and the name of the first baby born in British Columbia in 2025.
Betting on hospital location is open on the PlayNow site, today until 6 a.m. Dec. 31, 2024, and bets for the most popular names of 2025 are open now until Jan. 31, 2025.
In 2024, Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, sitting at 12.00 odds, welcomed the first baby of the new year.
According to a press release, the odds for Kelowna General Hospital being home to the first baby born are 20.00, meaning a winning bet of $10 will pay out $200. Royal Inland Hospital odds are at 26.00, meaning a successful $10 bet will result in a winning of $260. BC Women’s Hospital, sitting at 3.50 is a popular choice and a betting favourite to 23 labour and delivery hospitals, although BC Women’s Hospital hasn’t been the winning location for the first baby born since 2017.
Not only are hospital locations being bet on, but popular baby names in BC for the 2025 year are getting some gambling action too.
Olivia, the most popular girl name in the province with odds of 3.00. Emma, 6.00, Sophia, 6.00 and Charlotte, 8.00 are typically common names in the province for newborns, with more babies named Amelia, Ava and Isla, adding to the trending name list in 2024. Noah and Oliver have been common names for the last few years, and the names Liam, Theodore, Jack, Lucas, Ethan and Leo have been rising in popularity this past year.
