A Vancouver-based First Nations artist will be heading across the border next month to have her work featured in New York’s international fashion week.

Alicia Stephens, the creator and designer of Alicia’s Design’s, was invited by Oxford Fashion Studio to do a runway show in New York on Sept. 7.

“It’s crazy. I’m so excited about it and nervous,” Stephens says. “It’s an amazing opportunity for me to present First Nations art to the world.”

Out of the 20 fashion designers that will have their collections hit the runway on the same day as Stephens, she will be the only First Nations designer.

“I’m the only one that is native,” she says, adding there will be another Canadian designer from Toronto.

Stephens who is originally from Victoria says when she was younger, she had a dream of incorporating her culture onto different types of clothing and accessories that could be worn by anyone.

“I’ve always wanted to make my art for everybody,” she says. “I want to make it so there is no cultural appropriation involved or anything like that.”

The artist is known for putting Indigenous designs on clothing, shoes and different accessories with a modern approach.

“It’s more urban wear, it’s everyday wear and it's for everybody to wear,” she says.

Stephens will be heading to New York for five days and is currently fundraising to help pay for travel expenses.

Kamloops photographer Roe Farough says she will be offering discounted photoshoots to help Stephens fundraise.

“I think its really nice to spotlight the fact that she is a local Indigenous woman who started her business from the ground,” Farough says.

Farough says she met Stephens when the designer did a runway show in Kamloops earlier this month.

“The main reason why I offered to do the fundraising is that I love seeing strong independent women of colour take on the world in their own way,” she says.

The proceeds will go towards Stephen's travel expenses and accommodation during her five-day stay in New York.

Farough specializes in portrait and lifestyle photoshoots.
