The BC Green Party has announced its candidate for the new riding of Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream.

Vernon kinesiologist Stephanie Hendy moved to the city in 2021 and unsuccessfully ran in the 2021 city byelection for spot on council.

“Stephanie is a fierce advocate for community resources and services, with a keen awareness of how urban areas are often prioritized over rural areas," Green Party leader Sonia Furstenau said in a media release issued today, Sept. 19. "I am inspired by her determination to work to close this gap, and to ensure access to healthcare, recreation, and community support is the best it can be for her community. It’s definitely something we need more of in the legislature.”

Hendy currently sits on the Vernon Climate Action Advisory Committee, is a volunteer for Vernon’s Climate Action Now! group and the Okanagan Transit Alliance.

“As someone who works with people who have chronic health conditions every day, the BC NDP’s shortcomings and inconsistencies are all too obvious," she said in the release. "Healthcare has become divisive, unequal and unreliable in this province. People with disabilities and chronic illnesses in more rural areas are often left to fend for themselves without the support they need.”

The Green Party is the first to announce its candidate in the new Okanagan riding for the 2024 provincial election which will take place on or before Oct. 19, 2024.
