The B.C. Curling Championships are still going ahead in Kamloops, despite rising COVID-19 cases throughout the province.

Spectators won't be permitted in the rink and the venue has changed, but the tournament dates are set to remain the same, according to a Curl B.C. news release. Current ticket holders will be refunded.

Between Jan. 4 and 9, the Kamloops Curling Club at 700 Victoria St. will host both the 2022 Scotties B.C. Women's Curling Championship and the B.C. Men's Curling Championship.

The omicron variant of COVID-19 is sweeping across the country and creating challenges sport organizations.

Indoor sporting events were cancelled earlier this month due to rising cases, which, in Kamloops, forced the Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey tournament to postpone for a second year.

More recently, the 2022 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships were cancelled in Edmonton after a brief start this month.

Curlers are still expected to throw stones as the provincial tournament is set to begin next week.

Last year's curling tournaments were also cancelled due to the global pandemic, so fans can now watch the top curlers in the province compete as the tournament is streamed on Youtube.

CBC Sports will also stream the semi-finals and finals on its website.
