The BC Conservative Party has chosen its candidates for two Kamloops ridings and it picked some familiar names.

Barriere Mayor Ward Stamer will run in the Kamloops-North Thompson riding, while returning candidate Dennis Giesbrecht will run in Kamloops-Centre, according to a BC Conservative Party news release issued today, March 14.

They're the first candidates announced to run against BC United Party incumbents Todd Stone and Peter Milobar.

It's not the first time Stamer has sought a seat at a higher level of government.

In 2021, he made an unsuccessful run for the federal Conservative nomination in Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, beaten by Frank Caputo who went on to win the election and is the current MP.

Stamer was re-elected as Barriere mayor in 2022.

Giesbrecht has made more than one unsuccessful attempt for a seat on Kamloops council, the last time in 2022. He was also the BC Conservative candidate for Kamloops-North Thompson in 2020.

The party plans to hold press conference on Friday, March 15, where the two candidates will "share their vision for the region," according to the news release.

Neither the BC NDP nor the BC Green Party have announced candidates for Kamloops yet.

Current city councillor Bill Sarai is the only person so far to announce intentions to go after the BC NDP nomination.
