BC residents are urged to buy fresh, locally grown cherries rather than older fruit still being imported from the U.S.
“In the past week, some inferior-quality cherries from California and Washington State are being sold in the Canadian retail marketplace,” BC Fruit Growers Association president Peter Simonsen said in a news release issued today, July 10.
“Much of this fruit has been weeks off of the tree. There are also reports of ‘consignment selling’ of US cherries, where sellers ship the product without a price - a signal that dumping at below the cost of production is occurring.”
As a result, the association has taken the first step in an anti-dumping trade action by asking the Canadian Border Services Agency to monitor the imports.
“The seasonal cherry harvest normally progresses from California to Washington State and then to BC,” the news release says. “However, some California cherries are still on the market as BC production comes into full harvest, an almost unheard-of situation.”
It recommends people only buy BC cherries with green stems, indicating they have been freshly picked.
