A Kamloops shopper found more than just back to school sales at the mall this week.

A baby yellow bellied racer snake was found inside the Aberdeen Mall, Sept. 15, and brought to the B.C. Wildlife Park.

Animal care supervisor Tracy Reynolds said they won't need to keep the snake for long, and he was just "kind of lost."

“It’s very young, very tiny," she said. "It could’ve just come under a door even.”

Yellow bellied racers are common to the Kamloops region, particularly in the Cartwright area.

The snake will just need to be fed up and hydrated before it's released, and staff plan to return it to the wild as soon as possible.

“Those guys need to get back out and then find a suitable place to hibernate," Reynolds said.
