TORONTO - Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Canada says it's hired 1,200 additional workers at its Windsor assembly plant as it prepares to build a new minivan at the facility.
That's twice the number of new jobs the company was originally expected to add at the Windsor facility, where the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica will be built.
Reid Bigland, CEO of FCA Canada, made the announcement at the Canadian unveiling of the new van, and its hybrid variant, at the Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto on Thursday.
"In a time when good jobs are hard to come by, I'm very proud that we're doing our part here in Ontario, in Windsor and for the Canadian economy," Bigland told reporters following the announcement.
The new hires, which have occurred over the past nine months, bring the total number of staff at the plant to around 6,000.
The Pacifica is expected to hit dealerships this spring.
Bigland said the automaker will also continue producing the Dodge Grand Caravan at the facility.
