Attempted robbery last week leads to attempted murder charge

KAMLOOPS - An attempted robbery last week at a Columbia Street hotel was more extreme than initially thought, with the suspect now facing multiple charges including attempted murder.

John Dawson Scott Attrell, 36, also faces charges of robbery with a firearm, possession of a prohibitive device and careless use/storage of firearm after an incident on Nov. 15.

Kamloops RCMP responded to an emergency call around lunchtime and attended the 500 block of Columbia Street West. Two females had alleged a man tried to rob them, prompting a physical altercation. The man then allegedly produced a handgun. Police arrested the suspect soon after on Ord Road.

"The circumstances surrounding the robbery attempt are still being reviewed by investigators," said Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush.

Bush would not comment to why the suspect has been charged with attempted murder, however she said police have dealt with the accused before and that he knew the victims.

Attrell remains in custody and is slated to appear next in court on Nov. 25.
