AHMADABAD, India - A cargo truck carrying workers overturned on a slippery road Thursday after overnight rains in western India, killing 24 people and injuring another 25, police said.
The workers had hitched a ride aboard the truck while it was hauling salt to Madhya Pradesh state, police officer Bharat Bhai said.
The accident occurred near the automobile manufacturing hub of Sanand, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Ahmadabad, Gujarat state's main city, Bhai told The Associated Press.
The 25 injured were hospitalized in the area, he said.
Road accidents are common in India. Many are due to negligence, bad roads and aging vehicles.
