Police are looking into a suspicious fire that did serious damage to a Barriere business.

Barriere RCMP got a call for assistance from the Barriere Fire Department for a fire at a business at the corner of Sawmill Court and Agate Bay Road at around 4:37 a.m. Sept. 26, according to an RCMP media release. RCMP didn't identify the business.

An RCMP forensic specialist attended and examined the scene for physical evidence that could help investigators identify any suspects.

"Investigators now have reason to believe the blaze may have been an arson, due to findings at the scene," Cpl. Robert Welsman of the Barriere RCMP said in a release. "No injuries were sustained as a result of the blaze which resulted in a significant loss to both the commercial building and pieces of heavy machinery on site."

Anyone who witnessed this incident, or observed any suspicious activity in the area before or after the blaze, is urged to contact police if they have not already done so.

If you witnessed this incident, or observed any suspicious activity in the area before or after the blaze and have not yet spoken to police, you are asked to call the Barriere RCMP at 250-672-9918. Or remain completely anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
