Armed North Okanagan man in mental health crisis safely taken into custody

An police incident involving an armed suicidal man in the North Okanagan ended safely last night.

Officers responded to a call about a suicidal man who had barricaded himself in his home on Mabel Lake Road east of Enderby yesterday, Oct. 26, according to an RCMP press release.

The man’s family had called the police and reported he was intoxicated, armed and was threatening to commit suicide.

An Emergency Response Team and an RCMP crisis negotiator were called to scene, RCMP said, and around 9:45 p.m. the man surrendered without incident and was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act.

The Mental Health Act gives police the ability to apprehend people who pose a danger to themselves or others and take them to hospital involuntarily.

After taking the man into custody, police transported him to hospital for treatment.

The man may face firearm charges related to the incident.
