Archaeological human remains unearthed at Kamloops construction site

Crews working on the Victoria Street improvements in Kamloops unearthed archeological human remains.

KAMLOOPS - Construction crews working on improvements on Victoria Street in Kamloops have unearthed "non-modern" human remains.

The City of Kamloops says in a media release, the construction team followed archeological procedures upon discovering the remains. Representatives from Tk’emlúps te Secwe'pemc, Kamloops RCMP, and Golder Associates were called in to control the site. It was then determined the remains are not modern, but there is no information yet as to how old they are.

The City says the area has been cordoned off and has security on location, but construction continues with a 50-metre buffer from the site. The City expects construction to resume normal operations next week.

“We are committed to dealing with these remains with the utmost respect and care, and also with a sense of urgency in accordance with our commitments to the Tk’emlúps te Secwe'pemc,” says Mayor Ken Christian in the release.

The Tk’emlúps te Secwe'pemc Ancestral Remains Policy and Procedures are being respected during the recovery and inspection of the area.

“We appreciate the immediate actions taken by the project team and are fully aware of the steps that have been taken, which are in line with our policies,” says Rosanne Casimir, chief of Tk’emlúps te Secwe'pemc.
